Hayley in "Sunday Herald Sun" Australia

Thanks to Stephany from HWI for this article!

Soprano star Hayley Westenra has revealed her diva tendencies.
Sadly, they pale in comparison to Westenra's country cousin, opera superstar and knicker knacker Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
Westenra expanded on backstage badness when The Buzz asked her to confirm a US report that she shows no diva behaviour whatsoever.
"I do have a few," Westenra, 20, said. "I need my sleep. That's No.1. I'm not great if I'm woken up early in the morning.
"And I need my water on me at all times. But other than that, I'm pretty grounded. The people I suround myself with are all down to earth. I can count on them to pull me into line. I think it's my New Zealand upbringing."
Dame Kiri, who also had a New Zealand upbringing, was in court earlier this year to give testimony about cancelling a string of proposed dates with John Farnham.
The Dame said she disagreed with Whispering Jack's onstage banter and underwear being hurled onstage by his fans.
Westenra, in town this week to promote her new album, Treasure, said the classical world was notorious for diva behavior.
"No names, but I've seen it happen and it's embarrassing to watch," Westenra said. "You do yourself no favours behaving this way."
Westenra has sold two million albums worldwide. She is an ambassador for charity group Unicef (recently raised money to buy 6000 bicycles for schoolgirls in Ghana) and has a part time gig with Irish vocal ensemble Celtic Woman.
For now, Westenra's focus is Treasure, a collection of traditional Irish and New Zealand songs and four new tunes. She dedicates the album to her grandmother, Shirley Ireland, who passed on most of the songs to Hayley.
"She has always been a never-ending source of songs," Westenra said.
Hayley Westenra will be at Readings, 701 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn, on Tuesday at 6.30pm. She will perform and sign copies of her new album.

Weekend Herald: "Hayley Westenra - 'I'm a tough chick' "

5:00AM Saturday April 28, 2007
By Michele Hewitson

Photo / Martin Sykes

Hayley Westenra, that sweet little songstress with the lovely ringlets and skin like a porcelain doll, says, right at the end, "You know everything about me. I feel quite exposed."
I look at her sharply as she says this. Is she being sarcastic? Having a bit of fun at my expense? The look on her face is her usual serenely smiling one. Those extraordinarily big eyes hold only kindness.
She has just endured an hour and a half in a drearily bland hotel room being asked questions about herself. Which is what people do in interviews, obviously, but she is 20 years old and any normal 20-year-old would be bored out of her mind and hard pushed not to show it.

Hayley's Signing Session in Auckland!

Hayley was at an Auckland Sounds shop for a CD singing before leaving New Zealand to rejoin the Celtic Woman in America. I went to this event and it was one of the best experiences I ever had! Here are some photos!

Hayley in the Press: Cobham music wing named for Hayley

Cobham music wing named for Hayley
By IAN STEWARD - The Press Tuesday, 24 April 2007

Cobham Intermediate's most famous "treasure" returned to the Christchurch school yesterday to open a new hall and a music wing named after her.
Classical singer Hayley Westenra took time out of her busy international touring schedule to open the $1.2 million complex, which features a gymnasium, stage, and music rooms with specialty music computers.
Westenra said having a wing named after her made her "suddenly feel very old".
She has recently turned 20.
"I have such fond memories of my time at Cobham and I just know those students are going to get so much out of those new facilities."

New Zealand Herald Talks TREASURE!!

Hayley Westenra dominates British charts, again

12:40PM Tuesday March 06, 2007
New Zealand singer Hayley Westenra has scored a double UK musical coup with her latest release Treasure.
The album shot to number nine this week in the UK Album Chart and claimed the No 1 spot on the Classical Album Chart.
It is the third time one of Westenra's albums has held such positions in the British charts.
Universal Music New Zealand strategic marketing manager Alister Cain told NZPA while other New Zealand singers and musicians had achieved chart success overseas, no other artist had dominated the mainstream and classical charts at the same time.

Westenra album makes UK charts' top 10
8:20AM Monday March 05, 2007
LONDON - New Zealand teenage opera diva Hayley Westenra made the top 10 of British album charts on Sunday.
Westenra's album Treasure came in at nine.
Indie band the Kaiser Chiefs missed out on a memorable double on Sunday, going straight to number one in the UK album charts, only to be dethroned from the singles chart's top spot, the Official UK Chart Company said.

New Zealand Articles: Hayley Westenra Unearths Treasure

From Xtra, this article appeared before the release of Treasure. However, even late, it is still a valuble article to read!

Hayley Westenra Unearths 'Treasure'
06/03/2007
Xtra
Hayley Westenra's much anticipated new album Treasure was released in the UK in the last week of February and has already made it to No.1 spot on the Classical Album Chart. Underlining her cross-over appeal the Kiwi born singer's album also entered the UK Album Chart at No. 9. Her debut international album Pure also achieved a Top 10 UK Album Chart placing and saw her become the fastest-selling debut classical artist of all time.

Treasure: A Review

Ok, I’ve been wanting to do this for some time, but I was so wrapped up with university assignments that I just didn’t have the time! So here is my review of the New Zealand version, track by track!

Treasure is a work of art, an exceptional album that consists of mostly classical music. This album is my favourite to date.

Let Me Lie – my favourite track of the entire album, this song is a work of art. It clearly shows two things: one, that Hayley has amazing writing talent and ability, and two, that her vocal range sung at a low key just keeps getting better and better. In Pure, I think Hayley never sang low keys as well as in Odyssey. With Treasure, she got even better! This song is a great song to drive to university with every morning! It’s also one of those songs that get stuck in your mind, which is very relaxing!!

Scarborough Fair – when I heard her sing this with the Celtic Woman, I fell in love with it. It’s such a beautiful song, especially with the strings in the middle. It is ultimately the best version of this song I’ve heard.

Shenandoah – this song is a lot like Scarborough Fair; I don’t know but they remind me of each other quite a lot. Her high notes are at her best.

Summer Fly – I don’t how Hayley even remembers this song when she sings it! If it was me, I’d get my lyrics so mixed up! This song gets my feet tapping every time! It’s a very lively song and something new for Hayley, and I really, really like it.

Whispering Hope – it took me a couple of listens to appreciate this song fully. Now, it’s one of my favourites! It demonstrates Hayley’s true vocal talent and pleasantness and how she needs absolutely no background music to enhance her voice. It is simply natural talent. It is truly a beautiful, beautiful song that holds similar themes, but not melodies, to I Say Grace from Odyssey.
Danny Boy – I think this song sounds like a lullaby! It is so pleasant, I listen to it at night to fall asleep on those stressful late nights working on assignments. I thought Maev’s version sounded a lot like Church music, and I wasn’t the hugest fan of it. But Hayley’s version is so pleasant with the very quiet background music and her very soft voice. It’s absolutely lovely.

Summer Rain – I love this song!!! I love the strings and the ‘jumpiness’ feeling of the song. I think it is an extremely sophisticated song that Hayley has written, which again shows her writing talent, both musically and vocally (she said she arranged the music).
Last Rose of Summer – my favourite song from A New Journey and was thrilled it was on the album. It shows how crystal clear Hayley’s voice is, compared to Maev’s, who also has a beautiful voice. Hayley’s high notes are again at their best.
One Fine Day – One of her best songs from this album, Hayley sings it absolutely beautifully. Starting with a perfect high note, and ending it with another high note, every pitch is perfect. It is truly one of my favourite songs on Treasure.
Sonny – what a beautifully sung one, and what a sad story! I love how it only has piano in the background. It is so relaxing!! Hayley can’t do a better job on it.

Water is Wide – I was so upset when I hears the UK Odyssey got this one!! It is so beautiful!! My school choir last year sang it at our prize giving, but nothing compares to her version. I absolutely love it!! Another one of my favourites on this album.
Melancholy Interlude - Another song indicating Hayley’s talent on song writing!! A truly dark, yet beautiful song. It is so effective!! I love her vocal range in this song.
Abide With Me – don’t you just love Hayley’s hymns??? They are so well sung and so beautiful!! I loved Prayer from Odyssey and love this one equally. The best version of this hymn I have heard yet. Absolutely stunning.
Treasure is a master piece.

Hayley, you couldn’t have done it better. Thank you for this gift to the world.

Hayley As My Hugest Inspiration!

As one of my hugest inspirations, I feel a sense of obligation to acknowledge her and tell how and why she is one of my biggest inspirations.
Naturally being a huge fan of her voice, it is not only her gift that fascinates me. Reading her biography Hayley Westenra: The World at her Feet by Paul Little, made me realize how hard she has worked to achieve her goals and dream. Reading and knowing this made me realize how possible it can be for me to have the same ambition in my life to also live my dreams.

Her albums Pure and Odyessy have sold over 2 million copies world-wide and are famous for its angelic qualities. Her lyrics, particularly from Odyssey, have inspired some of my short stories and the songs are in general absolutely exceptional. I highly recommend it!Hayley has always been and will always be the ultimate female role model for those who wish to strive in this world to live their dreams.

Thank you for being such a wonderful and inspiring person, Hayley.

Hayley's Second International Album: Odyssey

Hayley Westenra's second international album Odyssey showed her maturing voice and huge growth from her first album Pure. Co-writing one of the tracks, What You Never Know, this album shows Hayley's true musical journey through different genres of music. A mixture of classical, folk hyms and pop, Hayley takes upon a path to include songs that will be of interest to anyone. Her cover of Enya's May It Be from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring represents her Kiwi spirit and pride of being a New Zealander.

Hayley's First International Album: Pure

Her first international album, Pure blew the world away, ending up as the world most sold Classical album in history of Classical music. This album was a mixture of Classical, pop, chorals and charols. Her trademark song Pokarakara Ana made her album very successful, presenting Hayley Westenra as a pure New Zealander. Her angelic voice made Pure sell over $2 million copies, and still sells today!
